English Writing with Multimedia (EWM Class) HELP & FAQ Pageto enable you to get started on this course
1. Do I need to buy a textbook for this course?
No, you don’t! All course readings will be provided to you through your online Learning Management System.
2. What do I need to do to get started on this course?
Get a Gmail Account With Your Name in the Address
For this very important task, you need to make sure that you have an English-only Google-Gmail account with your real name spelled out in English characters in your email address.
Examples of acceptable email addresses: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org
Examples of unacceptable email addresses: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com
The reason for requiring your name in your email address is to allow your instructor to quickly recognize you in your emails and on the Canvas site. It also helps to eliminate any chance of mistaken identity in the grading process. The reason for requiring you to have an English-only Google-Gmail account is because Google has some very useful applications that will help you a lot in this course–and in future courses. The only way you can get full access to some of those apps is by having a Google-Gmail account. Here is the link to the Google/Gmail account set-up page: https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?service=mail
If you have never set up a Google/Gmail account before, you may want to watch the following video tutorial, which explains everything step-by-step. (If you need English subtitles, you can turn on the “captions” in lower-right corner of the YouTube player.)
3. What else do I need to do?
Send Gary an Email from Your Gmail account.
The next thing you need to do is send me an email from your English Gmail account. Please make sure you indicate your course name-code, personal name, and student ID number in the Subject Line of your email (as shown in the video for #1). You can figure out the correct class name for your class by clicking on the top link for your class. Please make sure you include your course name-code, personal name, and student ID number in every email and text message that you send this semester. Otherwise, your message will not be answered in a timely manner.

4. How should I get set-up and adjust settings on the Canvas LMS
Get Set Up on Canvas (most classes)
If you get an invitation from Canvas, you will need to get yourself set up on the CANVAS Learning Management System. Many of your assignments will need to be done through CANVAS and most of your grades will be posted there so you can see how you are doing. After sending an email to your instructor from your new Gmail account, you will receive an invitation to join CANVAS. The video below explains all you need to know about this:
5. Anything else?
After Getting Set Up on Canvas…
You will spend most of your online time in the Canvas Learning Management System. That is where assignment information, announcements, learning resources, and much of your grade information is provided, so you won’t be using this site for much more than accessing Canvas and The Blog. Make sure you take some time to check out The Blog. There are all kinds of excellent learning and entertainment resources there and, of course, places to make comments about and share content that you find interesting or useful.
The following video tutorials are not needed until after you get set up in the Canvas LMS
(You don’t need them until later.)
